A Responsive Liturgy for the Feast of Tabernacles
A Responsive Liturgy for the Feast of Tabernacles
The LORD commanded Israel saying:
“You shall observe the Feast of Tabernacles seven days, when you have gathered from your threshing floor and from your winepress.”
Sukkot comes at the end of the harvest.
The grain has been gathered.
The grapes have been harvested.
The labor of the field has produced its fruit.
And God commands His people to rejoice.
Tonight, we gather at the time of ingathering.
We remember what God has provided.
We give thanks for what He has produced.
And we look forward to the greater harvest that is still to come.
Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe, who has given us life, sustained us, and allowed us to reach this appointed time.
Father, we thank You for bringing us once again to the Feast of Sukkot.
Teach us to remember Your faithfulness.
Teach us to recognize Your provision.
Teach us to rejoice in Your goodness.
May our worship be pleasing in Your sight.
May our homes be filled with rejoicing.
And may this Feast turn our hearts toward You.
As we celebrate Sukkot, open our eyes to see Your hand in everything we have received.
May the fruit of our lives bring glory to Your name.
Amen.
“And it shall be that if you earnestly obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the LORD your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, then I will give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your New Wine, and your oil.”
Who sends the rain?
The LORD our God sends the rain.
Who gives life to the field?
The LORD our God gives life.
Who causes the vine to bear fruit?
The LORD our God causes fruit to grow.
Who gives strength to gather the harvest?
The LORD our God gives us everything we need.
Every good and perfect gift comes from above.
“My Well-beloved has a vineyard on a very fruitful hill.
He dug it up and cleared out its stones, and planted it with the choicest vine...
He waited for the vineyard to yield good grapes, but it produced only worthless ones.
...What more could have been done for My vineyard than I have done for it?”
Where is the fruit?
Each Sukkot, we should examine ourselves to see if we have produced more fruit than the year before.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
May our lives produce fruit worthy of the One who planted the vineyard.
“You shall observe the Feast of Tabernacles seven days, when you have gathered from your threshing floor and from your winepress.”
To produce wine, grapes must be harvested and crushed
to release the juice, and then the transformation begins.
There are times in our lives when we face the crushing
of a winepress, but remember that this is how
New Wine is produced.
When we do not understand the pressure—
We will trust the LORD.
When obedience is difficult—
We will trust the LORD.
When the old season comes to an end—
We will trust the LORD.
When we cannot see what God is producing—
We will trust the LORD.
The LORD is faithful in every season.
“The threshing floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with New Wine and oil.”
Where there has been barrenness—
Bring forth fruit.
Where there has been loss—
Bring restoration.
Where there has been mourning—
Restore our joy.
Where Your people have become weary—
Renew our strength.
Do not fear.
Rejoice and be glad.
The LORD has done great things.
“No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. Nor do they put New Wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put New Wine into New Wineskins, and both are preserved.”
LORD, You are the God who makes all things new.
Make us into New Wineskins.
Soften the places that have become hard.
Renew our minds.
Restore our hearts.
Reshape our priorities.
Prepare us to receive everything You have for us.
Pour out Your Spirit upon us and fill us with New Wine.
Amen.
“Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the best wine until now!”
Amen.
